Abstract: Social interaction is crucial to games. Other players make games interesting and fun. In traditional game settings, physical proximity is an integral part of the social interaction, but the advent of computer games has precipitated a fundamental shift towards networked play. However, high-quality computer graphics cannot compensate for the absence of physical proximity between the players, which is of key importance in shaping their experience. Our evaluation of local and networked versions of a multiplayer game demonstrated that physical proximity is relevant not only for the subjective experience of fun, but also for achieving high scores. This game combines a tangible interface, video detection, and color tracking.
